The server is built from source. The repository does not ship a precompiled dist/ directory, so you have to build before the first start.
git clone https://github.com/markus-michalski/wikijs-mcp-server.git
cd wikijs-mcp-server
npm install
npm run build
npm run build runs the TypeScript compiler (tsc) and writes the result to dist/. The entry point is dist/index.js.
The server needs WIKIJS_API_URL and WIKIJS_API_TOKEN. The template is in the repository:
cp .env.example .env
Where the .env has to live so the server finds it is described on the Configuration page. Alternatively you can set both variables as environment variables in your MCP client configuration.
The client has to launch the server as a stdio process: node /path/to/wikijs-mcp-server/dist/index.js. With Claude Code, for example:
claude mcp add -s user wikijs node /path/to/wikijs-mcp-server/dist/index.js
Restart the client afterwards. On startup the server writes to stderr which host it is connected to (hostname only, never the token).
The server should show up as connected in the client (in Claude Code via /mcp). A simple test is a wikijs_list_pages call with limit 5.
cd wikijs-mcp-server
git pull
npm install
npm run build
Restart the MCP client afterwards so it loads the new build.
claude mcp remove wikijs).wikijs-mcp-server directory and, if present, the .env file holding the token.
